We were picked up around 8am this morning to start our journey out to Milford Sound and waved good-bye to Queenstown. We've loved Queenstown. It's definitely been our favourite town/city in New Zealand. It's a cool place.
The scenery is absolutely amazing on the way to Milford Sound. It's like driving into an undiscovered world. In fact, I can't carry on writing how beautiful and amazing these places are, because every day the scenery gets better. It's incredible.
We went through the Homer Tunnel which was dug out using only pick-axes and wheel-barrows back in the day (can't remember the year) and is 1.5km long! When we were going through, we could actually see the natural stone of the mountain on the walls. What I mean is, it's not like there's a load of concrete etc supporting the walls!
We made it to the Milford Sound cruise terminal at around 2.30pm. Once we started our cruise at about 3pm, the weather turned nice and sunny and it soon warmed up.
WOW! Milford Sound is unbelievable. It's absolutely spectacular. We cruised through on the ferry along the river between valleys that were carved out by glaciers. There's huge cliff faces of the mountains on either side, by they have green bush growing on them too, then there's hundreds of waterfalls popping out everywhere. Some fall into the river, some fall from the cliffs but then disappear into mist. There's seal colonies down there too. The cruise was really good and they took us right up to the waterfalls and we were getting sprayed by them. The spray and the sun was making rainbows too. It's just an amazing place. It's similar to the Halong Bay trip we did in Vietnam, but I really think that Milford Sound is nicer. What a place!
Our cruise lasted about 2 hours and fortunately we had brilliant weather for it. We've heard from loads of people that had really poor weather and didn't really enjoy it, so we were very lucky.
On the way to Te Anau, we made lots of nice scenic spots to take some pictures. Definitely up there as one of the nicest drives we've done.
It was 8.30pm by the time we got into our room at a campsite in Te Anau, and we were starving. I didn't even realise how late it was. We'd been to the supermarket just before and bought some stuff to make Spaghetti Bolognese with a girl from our bus called Emer. Really nice chatty girl from Ireland. I was quick off the mark once again and got to the kitchen first out of our bus group. Good job because the kitchen was pretty small and already packed with other people. It was a right battle trying to get pans, plates and cutlery. Nightmare. Good job we picked something easy to make!
The spag bol was lovely, and we got a nice big portion each. We were stuffed though, so went for a nice walk down to the lake with Conny. It's flipping cold here though. Feels like we're in England with the cold weather.
