We woke up to the cold air again this morning. Really feels like waking up to the cold in England. It's the first time I've had to wear trainers in ages, unless we've been going on a big hike.
We were on the ferry for 8am, back on the mainland by 9am and then went to pick up the rest of the group from Invercargill. They were not impressed with their stay in "the a******* of the world" at all. They practically slept, ate, and slept again until this morning as there was nothing else to do. Definitely glad we went to Stewart Island!
The drive isn't as scenic through to Dunedin, it's mostly flat farming land and sometimes rolling hills, so a lot like England. We did make a stop and saw some Fur Seals though. One of them was laying on the beach, so we got really close.
We made it to Dunedin, which is Gaelic for Edinburgh (I think), and checked into an old hotel and got a room for us and Emer. It's an old hotel, not fancy in the slightest. We really feel like we're in the UK though now. It's where a load of Scottish decided they'd build a new Scotland...so they went from a cold place to another cold place. Great idea.
We went straight out for a walk around the centre. There's not a great deal there. There's a nice big cathedral though and there's supposed to be some other nice building around. We ate at a place called Metro where we get a Stray bus discount. Worked out as a fantastic deal. Therese and Emer both had Pumpkin Soup, Sundried Tomato and Feta Salad and a lemonade for $9 (£4.50) each!! I had a big pizza and a lemonade for $10 (£5). Absolute bargain.
After filling our guts, we met the rest of our bus group for the Speight's Brewery Tour. Really good tour giving us all the history about beer in New Zealand and how it's made, and the tour guide was really funny. At the end we could drink as much beer as we liked over the course of about 10 minutes, trying their different brews like Summit, a dark beer and cider. I was bloated after 2 little glasses though.
Straight from there, me, Therese and Emer went for a drink in the Speight's Pub next door - nice place but not a proper pub at all, more like a wine bar. Bit weird. But they have fresh beer from the brewery. I was too bloated to have one though!
It was fairly late so we went back to the hotel and reunited with a member of the "Family", Craig. Yep, we've caught him up in Dunedin and pretty much have the same travel plans for at least a week now.
Me and Craig were really tempted to stay up to watch the Man Utd vs Man City game, but it wasn't going to be on until about 1.45am and we were all really tired.
Dunedin is alright, but we're not going to stop any longer and just taking the bus tomorrow. Although Craig has spent a few nights here and enjoyed it, so it probably is worth at least 2 nights.
