Had a really good sleep last night and fortunately we set off at the reasonable time of 9am.
Our first stop was at a place called Warehouse. We had to go buy stuff for tonight's fancy dress! And the theme...you can't wear clothes!? They sell everything non-food in Warehouse. I came away with a 12 pack of tea towels, Therese and Mel had a New Zealand flag each and face paint stuff...
We made a few stops on the way. There was a nice picture taking scenic spot where the river winds through the valley.
Then we stopped off at a seal colony. Lots of seals sunbathing on the rocks and pups running around.
Then we went to Pancake Rocks, which is where the cliffs have been worn away by the sea and you can see how the rock has formed as layers over millions of years looking like a stack of pancakes. That was a really nice stop actually. Our damn camera stopped working though. Seems to be broken! It was playing up the other day too. Hopefully it'll sort itself out like it did the other day!
The drive onto Barrytown is supposed to be one of the top 10 Coastal drives in the world. And we could see why. It's stunning.
We made it to Barrytown for 7pm. We're staying at a Pub that has cabin accommodation out the back. There is nothing in Barrytown other than this pub, literally. Population, 20 people.
We got a room of 6 for us 5 plus a nice german girl called Conny. Same girl that me and Therese shared with last night. The kitchen is tiny there so I was quick off the mark and shot in the kitchen to make veg chilli, again. I didn't even take my bag off, I was straight in there. Good job as well as there were a few people who had to wait over an hour to cook.
We had our tea and then chilled out in the pub for a couple of drinks. None of us could be bothered with the fancy dress other than Mel, but then shortly after, Therese decided to get involved. And shortly after that, I decided I should get involved too. Craig and Paolo said they were too old for that malarky. So Therese and Mel were sorted with their NZ flags draped around them, and I set to with my twelve tea towels. The girls had bought a stapler so I nicked that. Everyone was laughing at me and intrigued at what the hell I was going to come up with. I made a dress of course! Then Paolo produced an exclusive Milan styled tea towel mask. The girls had already gone to the pub, so I modelled it for Craig and Paolo...we were all in hysterics. Craig took a picture and I looked a right sight!
So I waddled across to the pub like a penguin and walked in on my own. It was almost like everyone in the pub stopped what they were doing to laugh and take pictures of my ridiculous outfit. I'd looked in the mirror before I went in and couldn't stop laughing myself! Really funny. Paolo definitely finished it off with his mask masterpiece. Pretty much everyone got dressed up. There was a guy in a sleeping bag, another had bath mats wrapped around him, another with maps wrapped around, all sorts.
Then it was straight into the drinking games with Flipcup. Me, Therese, Mel, Conny, a Canadian girl and Caj, the bus driver, were Team Fern. Two teams go head to head, and it's a race starting at one end where you have to down half a plastic cup of alcohol then put that cup at the edge of the table and flip it upside down, then the next player in the team goes and so on. First team to flip all their cups, wins!
First and second rounds, we absolutely blitzed. The third we lost, but then we won the final! Kicked arse! It was a good laugh.
I had beer soaked into the tea towel all around my face, I've never laughed at myself so much.
By about 1.30am, we'd had enough and went back to our room for a private party. The iPod was on and Therese, Mel and Craig were singing away, until Therese fell on the floor. And again later. It was really funny and Mel was very tipsy too. Paolo didn't know what the hell was going on.
Had a good night in one of the most random places in New Zealand. It's also know as Baz Vegas!
