Had a well needed sleep in until 11.30am this morning, very tired after the long day yesterday.
We didn't have much planned for the day other than have a look around the area where our hostel is to get our bearings. We don't have free WiFi at the hostel so we had to look around for it. McDonalds and the Apple Store have it so we have to stand outside those places to get on the Internet etc. The internet in the hostel costs $4 (£2.70) an hour! So expensive! Oh, and McDonalds is about £5.75 and that only comes with small fries and small drink!!!
Lovely and sunny today by the way!
We checked the kitchen out this morning and were surprised how clean and tidy it was. We'll be having to make our own food from now on to save money. Went to a supermarket a short walk away called Woolworths. And even that place is expensive! Anything that you'd buy at home is at least double. I was looking at bread, and a branded multi-seed one was over $6 (£4)!! I can't believe it. We just got the Woolworths own for $1.20 (80p) which still isn't cheap compared to home. A pack of ham or cheese is double or triple home prices too. The only cheap thing we found was tins of tuna which were 90 cent (60p) each. So we'll be eating a lot of pasta and tuna in cheap tomato sauce for a while! Fruit isn't cheap either. A bag of apples worked out at 50p an apple. But, that's what it costs so we'll have to get on with it. Just a shock coming from the cheap prices in Asia!
It's not very Christmassy in Sydney at all. There are Christmas trees up here and there, but not many decorations. There's no fancy lights on the streets or anything. It's strange really.
We dropped our shopping off, then walked to Kings Cross to see a mate I used to work with, called Ben. He actually works in a hostel himself, but it didn't have as good reviews etc so we didn't bother staying there. Took about 25 minutes to walk there and we passed some nice places like Hyde Park and St Mary's Cathedral as well as a famous Coca-Cola sign. When we got there, we were told Ben was on holiday for a few days and wouldn't be back until the 27th. I didn't tell him exactly when I was visiting Sydney though. We got to see a few sights anyway.
When we got back to the hostel, we went to the kitchen to make something to eat...beans and boiled eggs on toast! While we were in there, the cleaners brought in a couple baskets of food. It was all the stuff that'd been left behind by other backpackers. There was all kinds of stuff that hadn't even been opened. We were like scavengers and got all kinds of bits and bats. There was only us and another couple in there so we had the best pick. Felt like scruff bags, but whatever saves some money!
Time to sample the night life. We went to the bar a couple of doors on called Scary Canary. It's a bit of a crazy place. They're always doing some sort of party games in there. Everyone seems to be drunk early as well. Then we realised why. The drinks are so expensive, that everyone gets drunk at their hostel before they go out. It's about £4 a pint!
There's a few party buses that stop off here as well, so everyone gets very drunk on those. We had a couple in there and then moved on to see what else we could find.
It's not warm on a night here, very nippy. Need at least jeans and a t-shirt, but the wind is cold. Don't worry, we're not complaining!
We found a place called Scruffy Murphy's. And it was exactly that. Pretty rough bar, which also means cheap drink. $7 (£4.40) for a jug of beer when we first got there and then it went up to $10, so it was pretty cheap. But they had a live band coming on so we definitely wanted to stay and see that. And we were glad we did as the band were really good. The lead singer sang a couple of Killers and Kings of Leon songs and sounded exactly like them! Played a load of good songs anyway. Stayed in there until 2am - watched a very good band, did a bit of leg jigging and drank cheapish beer. Good night.

Michelle Sounds like a good first night in Sydney although the food prices are a joke...no wonder you were getting the best leftovers...I would have been too! No point in wasting it! xxxxxx
