Tuesday we set off at 8:00 for our organised group trip to the Mekong Delta, on route we stopped off to view some big buddha statues then finally arrived in the Mekong at midday. The Mekong Delta is a region in southwestern Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of distributaries. As soon as we arrived we swapped to a boat and sailed across to what they called Tortoise Island. We walked around the island and got a feel of the way of life there, we tried coconut chocolate which was delicious! We were guided to a sort of canal which passed through the island where we got into little wooden canoes and were paddled along the canal. Later we drove to Can Tho the largest city in the Mekong Delta for a night in a hotel, we went for some dinner then went straight to bed as had to be up at 4:30 in the morning!!!
Wednesday we were up super early to go to the fish market, it was absolutely packed of locals throwing fish between stalls, a strange but fun experience. There were lots of different fish and even frogs being sold, it was very busy when we were there at 5 however we were told that this was a quieter hour and it is even busier in the earlier hours! After, we headed back to the hotel for some breakfast before heading off to the floating market which was a fun experience, locals take their boats along to a section of the river and create lines which you can go through in your boat and view what they were selling, mostly fruit and vegetables, each boat mantled a bamboo stick with a piece of fruit or veg tied to the top to advertise what they were selling. After, we chilled at a plantation/restaurant, we walked around the rice field, banana fields etc. then sat in the restaurant, Laura had a ice-cream and Ben tried snake!! Finally we headed back to Ho chi Minh, very tired from our early start we were relieved to be heading back.
