The last few days here in London have been so much fun - I love London! Six of us from Kumuka (Andy, Brad, Julia, Anthony and Glen) have been sightseeing together here as our numbers continue to drop. On Wednesday morning we met up for some silly fun at the London Dungeon, a very gimmicky and spooky take on London history. There was quite a lot of audience participation and I had to pretend to be burnt at the stake while others were tried for various crimes or made to partake in a fake autopsy as the dead person.
After a lovely pub lunch (having to turn down an invitation to a Heston Blumenthal restaurant for budgeting reasons) we spent the next few hours walking the south bank of the Thames from Tower Bridge all the way to Westminster. It was a beautiful walk and full of history as we walked past old ruined medieval halls, palaces and churches, old ports, the Shakespeare Globe Theatre and the Tate Modern Gallery. It has clearly been extensively refurbished and redeveloped over the past few decades and is now filled with cool looking restaurants and pubs as well as galleries and riverside activities. It is positively buzzing.
We visited Buckingham Palace, walked around the Houses of Parliament to see where the TV news crews do much of their political reporting and interviews and, best of all, we saw Wicked!!
We met up with Jess and saw the stage show Wicked - not only did I get a great student discount, but I also had a ball. I really got into it and can't believe I never saw it at home!
Yesterday I caught up with Brad and Andy in the morning to visit the Doctor Who Experience. It's a bit dorky, I know, but it was great fun.
In the afternoon we visited Harrods, the huge posh department store owned by Mohamed Al-Fayed, father of Princess Diana's partner Dodi. It really is huge, containing a Christmas World, fancy clothes, delicious food courts/markets and a Harry Potter store. Sadly most Harrods items are outside my budget range.
We attended Evensong at Westminster Abbey before having a farewell dinner for Andy and Brad who flew home later the evening.
Today I met Julia, Glen and Anthony at the British Museum before having a delicious lunch and saying goodbye to Glen. Our numbers were really dropping!
We spent the afternoon doing a few quick stops such as 10 Downing St before heading to Leicester Square. We visited the M&M Store which is an amazing feat of marketing and branding for a mere chocolate brand. We then said goodbye to Julia - and then there were two! With a couple of hours to kill before we saw the stage show Yes, Prime Minister we were hanging around Leicester Square when we noticed a red carpet and small crowd in front of a cinema. We waited around as the crowd got bigger and were well rewarded as many actors I recognised from TV and film came past. Highlights were Michael Shannon from Revolutionary Road and Boardwalk Empire and Liz White from Life of Mars. The very best bit was when Jamie Oliver and his wife turned up - he only stopped for three people and I was one of them! I was buzzing all night and kept showing poor Anthony the photo!
Yes, Prime Minister was a fantastically witty and relevant show in it's take on today's politics. The last few days have been so much fun with everyone, it was sad to see them all go. Thankfully Anthony and I have many more exciting plans for the rest of the week!
