It was the day we had been looking forward to for a long time: the chance to see Arsenal play. It is the weekend of the Emirates Cup, a two day round-robin tournament between Arsenal and the three best performing Emirates sponsored clubs from around the world. This year the teams are Boca Juniors (Argentina), Paris St Germain and New York Red Bulls and we had tickets for the first day of the Cup!
On our way in we stopped at King's Cross Station to see Platform 9 3/4 from Harry Potter which wasn't in the best spot as they're currently renovating the station so this wall with the sign and the trolley halfway through was outside and looking a little shabby. Anyway it was a bit of fun and another stop ticked off our list.
There were lots of Arsenal supporters on the train and it just like going to the footy at home. Following the crowds from the station, suddenly from behind these houses Emirates Stadium emerged. It's very different from the MCG as there's no park around it or other open spaces for other sports grounds - as it's so new and there's not much space left in London, it is surrounded by terrace houses and shops. It is an amazing place inside and out, very new and very flashy compared to the mish mash of different stands at the MCG. After getting Tom his birthday present of a new Arsenal top, we set off in our new Arsenal gear into the stands. We were there nice and early and Arsenal wasn't playing until the second game so only half the crowd was there and we were able to get right to the front and get autographs from players from the different clubs. The Paris St Germain and Boca Juniors players were the friendliest and most generous with coming over to the fans. We didn't get any Arsenal players unfortunately but we were very very excited when we got Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger's autograph!
The games themselves were great and the atmosphere was very fun. the Argentinian supporters were very loud, with a constant stream of drums, whistles and chanting - I cannot imagine how loud it must get when there are more than 30 of them! Unfortunately Arsenal lost their two goal lead to draw 2-2. It was very disappointing but it was just such a great experience being there!
