We visited the British Museum this morning which has so much to see that you'd need much more than one day - which makes it a good thing that entry is free. With our limited time we chose the ancient Egypt and Athens exhibits. I was particularly excited to see the Rosetta Stone, used to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs. We also saw friezes and grand statues from the Parthenon in Athens, they tell so many fascinating stories and are the result of such impressive craftsmanship.
We then made our way to Buckingham Palace and were lucky enough to go inside as they only just opened the State Rooms to the public last week. The rooms are truly magnificent, the work of Monarch after Monarch over the past few hundred years. We walked in through the Ambassadors entrance and up the Grand Staircase. We visited the throne room, several drawing rooms and the room where they took William and Kate's wedding photos. Many beautiful portraits adorn the walls, my favourite is one of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with their young children. There was an exhibit for Faberge, who made delicate jewellery, ornaments and frames for royal families across Europe. In the Grand Ballroom is Kate Middleton's wedding dress, shoes, earrings and bouquet, along with a video of the designer explaining how these were made. The engineering of the dress is amazing. Needless to say, Tom skipped over much of this section! I can also proudly say that I had tea at Buckingham Palace! Not inside, but the grounds were a beautiful place to sit and admire the whole place.
We walked through St James Park and then past 10 Downing St on our way to the London Eye. Even though we made friends with one of the police officers there, we were still unable to get in! The London Eye was a fun way to see London and rest our weary feet for half an hour. The views were amazing and people were very trigger happy with their cameras! The 4D experience was also pretty funny: a 3D film with smells and fog and foam! We ended our day watching the sun go down over the Houses of Parliament - very weary!
