This morning we didn't rush to get ready, no alarms were set. Still woke up before 8am though!
We had breakfast and then went out to do the peninsula walk. Firstly we stopped at the isite to pick up a map which was about as useful as a chocolate kettle! Anyway we figured as long as we follow the coast we'll be fine.
Headed out to the peninsula taking in the scenery and local bird life and then came across the seal colony (the main reason I wanted to do the walk). To start with we encountered seal pups in a little rock pool who were so playful and inquisitive. They didn't shy away from us at all. Then after some grunting noises we figured out they also were hiding in tubes and under the wooden walk away!
Just round the corner we found the larger seals who also didn't seem to fazed by us...or anything for that matter. Most were sound asleep!
We then faced our first hill to take us up to the cliffs...3 hours and 10k later and a wrong turn down a lot of steps only to have to come back up them and we were back in Kaikoura town centre! Ice cream was a first priority, followed by lunch and a nap!
The afternoon turned into a fixing my blog, realising that half the dates were wrong and activities in an incorrect order - oops! All sorted now after an afternoon trying to remember the exact dates - turned into a detective hunt, rooting though receipts, boarding cards, photos and Facebook entries!
Then it was dinner and we began to make our vegetable curry (meat was too expensive). As we did the Swiss guy from our room, who had been out fishing during the day, suggested a trade. If we have him some curry we could have some fish. We happily agreed! The red cod he provided us with was so delicious and it doesn't get much fresher then that. We then sat up learning to play backgammon and how to shuffle cards with one hard (failing at the latter)!
Then ours beds were calling us ready for the next day of travelling!
