Laura's Australian travels
33 - Monday 17th - 19th November Fraser Island, QLD, Australia, EAST COAST with APRIL!!
AND WE DANCED
Today we set off for our 3 day adventure and tour of Frazer island, which is just off the coast of rainbow beach along the east coast of Australia. Frazer is the world largest sand island, and on the trip you are able to drive 4x4 through the sand along the sea line and basically have lots of fun.
So the way Dingo on Frazer works is you get put into a group of about 40 and then split into 5 groups of 8 by the tour guide. The group of 40 camp together and the group of 8 are the people who you share your 4x4 with for the whole 3 days. You also get given a food box, which is down to the 4x4 group to decide how much to eat per day, what to cook and who had to do the washing up. This of course caused no end of trouble in our group as we had a few food thief's among the group :s. Which meant the had all the ceral bars without telling people and on the last night had more steak which left tiny fatty bits for the rest of us....this went down very badly.
On the first day we set off from rainbow beach in the cars, music was blasting and we caught the ferry over to the island which is where the sand driving started. The mood was awesome, we had such a cool leader MUZZA, he made us chose group names and sung terribly the whole trip. Within our groups the leader MUZZA had a walkie talking in the lead car and would shout down it which gear the car needed to be in for certain parts of the drive. This was so helpful because along the way cars would get stuck in the sand and if it was your car it meant you had to get out and push it. The driving got really hard at some points because we started going in land which mean driving in dry sand, it was so hilly and bump it was so much fun we had the walkie talkie in continuously listening to MUZZA and his instructions although all you basically had to do was put it in low range, out your foot right down and hope you didn't get stuck. The driving part was insane it was tough but so funny all at once. When I was driving you could feel the wheels spinning and knew if you took your foot off the gas, you had had it and the car wouldn't move until it was given a push. So the pressure was really on because nobody wanted to be the first to get stuck, thankfully the Germans took that crown...
After the first day driving we hit up the campsite to find the tent we would be sleeping in, as you know camping really is NOT my thing but it's all part of the Frazer experience and after a few ciders camping seemed fine!! The next morning MUZZA was there to wake everybody up with the theme song...and WE DANCED fresh if the rum from the night before! Day two brought us all to lake Mckenzie, where we all chilled in the sun, sapling in the water and getting ready for the next drive. The lake was unreal, it was fresh water but surrounded by white sand, it felt like the dessert with the amount of sand around it was beautiful. Again we drive along the sand both wet and dry proving to be challenge yet great fun before embarking up our last night in camp...which it's thankful for before returning to rainbow beach the next day.
