After 5 days in Western Australia, we decided we really should see some of Perth! We found a walking tour in our guidebook, so we decided to go for a wander around the city. The walk to the bus stop took us through some of the rough parts of town - lots of empty lots and abandoned building mixed in with offices and garages it seemed! We were catching the free CAT bus to town - Perth has 3 of these and Fremantle has another two. They're a fantastic way of getting around the city - we can't believe they don't charge for them!
Once in the city, we headed for the Art Gallery of WA, where we grabbed a coffee for the walk. We wandered past the huge Victorian post office and some street entertainment on Murray Street, before we passed the restored town hall - apparently it's the only convict-built town hall in the country and they did a pretty good job! Our route then took us just outside the centre of town past the old fire headquarters, the hospital and the cathedral - another grand Victorian building on it's own square. We came out in an area filled with government and court buildings, before heading towards the Swan River, and the famous Swan Bell tower which contains bells dating from the fourteenth century and taken from St Martin-in-the-Fields church in London!
After a look around the waterfront, we were pretty tired so decided to cheat and get the free bus back to town! We found a shopping centre with free wifi so we sat and spent a couple of hours booking hostels for Bali and Malaysia; we're getting very excited about heading somewhere new now!
Back at the hostel, we had another night in and watched Shakespear in Love on the telly - it was the best of a bad night's Australian TV!
Off to the YHA to meet Tosh tomorrow…
