This morning we checked out of our double room and headed for Perth station to catch the train to Fremantle where we planned to spend the next 3 nights…things turned out differently when we eventually arrived!
We got to the hostel early and were told we could check-in in about an hour, so we left our bags and had a wander around the 'Cappucino Strip' in Fremantle, stopping for a coffee along the way. So far, so good, until we checked in and headed to our room!
As we walked in, we were greeted by the messiest room we've ever seen in 8 months of travelling. The other beds were clearly occupied by long termers working in Perth, who'd gradually taken over the entire room with their crap! There were clothes, toiletries, shoes and bottles all over the floor and we barely managed to find space for our rucksacks! There was also no obvious way to climb up to our top bunks - Laura's didn't have a ladder and mine was pushed up against the wall! Laura was quite upset and we both couldn't believe the state of the room (see picture). Then we headed to the kitchen, where we made our lunch while fighting off flies that were buzzing around the open bins.
We decided to head out and go and see a bit of Fremantle while we decided what to do. We hopped onto the free CAT bus to the Esplanade, and sat in the park. We decided to ask if we could get a refund on the other 2 nights and look for something else.
Back at the hostel, we were told we could get a refund and headed around the corner to a hostel that was a member of the YHA until recently to check if they had any beds…they did! We thought our problem was solved until we went online and read the reviews - it turns out that the hostel we'd just booked was even worse than the one we were in! Back to square one… after lots of online searching and phone calls, we managed to get a double room at a hostel in West Perth for $20 more per night than what we were going to pay - it'll be worth it to get out of this place though!
After cooking tea in the dodgy kitchen, we settled down to watch The Goonies on the sticky hostel sofas. It cheered us up a bit at least! Then we headed to bed and eventually managed to get into them…can't wait to get out of here tomorrow!
