After a nightmare bus journey overnight, we arrived in Cairns at 6am, all very tired and wanting nothing more than a shower and a bed! We got a taxi to our hostel and put our bags in the luggage room. The guy told us to come back after lunch to check-in…just 6 hours to wait then!
We went to a coffee shop next door for some caffeine, and then I used the opportunity to call home - it's not often we're up this early!
For the rest of the morning we wandered around the CBD, luckily Cairns isn't too big, and our hostel is right in the middle, so we didn't have far to walk! We got some breakfast in a café, browsed in a few shops when they opened, and sat at a table in a shopping centre for a few hours!
When we eventually checked in, we were impressed with the hostel and our room. The only bad thing were the annoying German boys watching a film on their laptop, and making no effort to be quiet while the 3 of us tried to sleep! A few hours later, after a shower and sleep, we were all feeling more human, so we went to the bar for our free evening meal (another plus point for the hostel). The food was quite basic (savoury mince and rice), but it was free so we were happy.
That night in the bar was a game of 'Bogan Bingo' where we learned that a 'Bogan' is like an English 'Chav'…we think! It was free to play, so we joined in. Kelly left early, as she had to get up at 3am the next morning for her flight, but we stayed until the end.
When we got back to the room, the German boys were having a very loud conversation across the room, with the balcony doors open letting all the street noise in. Meanwhile, poor Kelly was in her top bunk desperately trying to get a few hours sleep! I shut the doors, and luckily after a while everyone went to sleep. We don't often have issues with our room-mates, but I'm going to struggle to put up with these 2 for another 3 nights…
