With slightly fuzzy heads, we packed up our stuff (such a fun job trying to fit everything back into our rucksacks!), showered and checked out of the hostel. Our next stop was at the beach staying with a guy we'd contacted on globalfreeloaders.com. It's a bit like couch surfing but a different site. Basically you look at people's profiles, see what they have to offer for free (couch, spare room etc) and then if they like what you say they email you back and you arrange to stay with them. Jeff had replied to our message and offerred to put us up in his apartment on the beach for 3 nights. We were a bit wary as it was our first time doing anything like this, but lots of travellers do it to save money and meet new people, and we were open to new experiences.
So we followed Jeff's instructions and took the train all the way to the beach at the other side of the city. As soon as we got off the train we were surprised by how much colder it was on that side. The fog that San Francisco is famous for makes it very cold over that side. We sat a the cafe which was our meeting point and waited for Jeff to arrive. Right on time, Jeff walked towards the cafe and unzipped his jacket to show a notepad hanging round his neck saying 'Laura Bailey and David Parsons'! We called him over and he asked if we were the British backpackers and introductions were made.
We dropped our bags off at his place, a lovely one bed apartment right on the beach. We had taken up his kind offer of the 'Jeffery tour' which started on the beach with a few shots of the Ocean. It was the first time we'd seen it since being there, apart from in the distance. We then got into his car and started the driving tour. Jeffery took us round the whole city and showed us everything we would want to see. We got some spectacular photos from the top of twin peaks, drove through all of the famous neighbourhoods and got some great shots of the city from Treasure Island, halfway across the Bay Bridge. We didn't go over the Golden Gate bridge as it was so foggy we wouldn't have been able to see anything. It was a fantastic afternoon and so kind of Jeffery to take us. We would have paid a lot of money to go on a tour bus and would have seen the same thing!
That night we went to Jeffery's favourite steak house for dinner with his friend Chelsea. The food was amazing and we were introduced to the famous 'Anchor Steam' beer which is brewed in San Francisco. The steaks were all served with Yorkshire Puddings, described in the menu as coming from 'jolly olde England'! None of us could finish the whole meal so we all left with doggy bags!
On the way home Jeffery drove down the famous Lombard Street, the crookedest street in the world! He also pointed out the house from 'The Real World: San Francisco' that I can just about remember from the 90s! Back at the apartment Jeffery made us a great bed on the living room floor, better accommodation than the hostel! We went to sleep very happy and amazed by what we'd seen in one day!
