We drove 238 miles on state highways to Crater Lake Resort in Fort Klamath OR. We continue to drive through mountains but the beautiful views of forests, rivers, lakes, valleys and mountains are so worth it. We travel a little slower but it does improve gas mileage a little. (RVers celebrate even a few tenths improvement in mpg.) I am reminded of the saying that motor boaters enjoy getting to the destination while sail boaters enjoy the journey. This is the first RV park that made us wait 2 ½ hours to check in at 3:00. As lovely as the grounds are, they seem to take advantage of every opportunity to make us pay more money. And there is little to no cell service in the area. Later in the afternoon, we drove the short distance to Crater Lake National Park. Only a small portion of the park is open but so worth it. The pristine lake was glass smooth and the surrounding mountains were perfectly reflected. The famous island in the center is appropriately named Wizard Island. This is a volcanic lake, formed after the eruption and then filled with rain and snow. It gets over 533 inches of snow yearly and the snow piles along the road are still higher than the truck roof today.
