Kya Travels
We got up today and went to the hostels breakfast room for a cooked breakfast. Darren got a porridge, and I got a vegetarian fry, which is what they call the big breakfasts here (that or Irish Breakfast, anyway). On my plate was an Irish dish that I've never had before, called potato bread. It's so delicious! I wish I just had the whole plate of potato bread! Yum! After breakfast we walked down the street for a while and had a look in a few charity shops (op-shops), looking for clothes. None of us found anything in the couple of shops we looked in, so we went into a pub called The Anzac for a beer in the beer garden. Next we walked up to a place called The Original Factory Shop, which was just a big warehouse type shop with cheap clothes. The boys found an outfit each, and I got myself a rain jacket and scarf. We went back to the Anzac to get some lunch, but apparently they don't do lunch there, but recommended a place up the street called Sunny's Cafe for cheap food. We went over to Sunny's and the prices were definitely cheap! I don't think there was anything on the menu over £5! The food wasn't fantastic, but cheap is always good!! After lunch, we started to make our way back down to the hostel, stopping on the way first at a fruit shop for a couple of apples, then at a craft shop. The shop had these tea-towels that had Northern Irish slang translated into English. They looked pretty cool! We almost bought them, but then decided we might wait til we come back at the end of the holiday so we don't have to carry them around or post them home. We then continued to make our way down to the hostel, but made one more stop. A shop called The Sweetie Jar! I bought a packet of the local sweet, which is called Yellow Man. It's pretty much bright yellow hard candy. And it's yummy! Darren got a Yellow Man flavoured ice-cream too. I asked if there were any other local delicacies, and she pointed me to Dolse, which is seaweed. Being a sweet shop, I thought it would be sweet, but she said its salty, so I thought I'd give it a miss. Maybe if it was in a smaller bag! Then we went back to the hostel and, you guessed it, had a nap. Oh, it's a hard life! When we woke up, we still hadn't heard from Meghan again, which was annoying, and getting Darren quite frustrated! So we eventually decided to head out and grab some dinner. We went back to the Anzac Bar, and got some food. It wasn't fantastic. Pretty average actually. Darren got a surf and turf steak, which was the tiniest steak I've ever seen, with whole prawns on top that he had to peel himself, and which hardly even had any meat on them! But to make up for it we got a sticky-toffee pudding to share, which made it all worthwhile. We eventually heard back from Meghan, and got another apology that she wouldn't be able to meet up with us again. This was getting quite annoying, as it was pretty much the reason we came to Ballycastle, to meet Darren's family. Darren called her though, and got the number of a great aunt, that he called and arranged to meet the next day, so it was all good again. We went to a bar called O'Conners, and had a few drinks. We met a girl called Noelle McCauley who knew the aunt we would be meeting, and who also had been living in Australia for a while. We also met a guy called Bran, who was a chef at the restaurant across the road. He said we should go there for a meal the next day, and he'd make us up something good. We had a few more drinks there, then headed back to the hostel, where I went to bed, while the boys stayed up for another drink.
