Kya Travels
We got up today, and got ready for our black cabs tour. We were a little disappointed that they weren't all actual black cabs! The one we got was more like a yellow maxi taxi from home!! Our driver took us around the town, explaining the troubles of the last 40 years or so. We stopped first in the Protestant (British) side of town, Shankill, where we got out and walked up and down the streets looking at the giant loyalist murals that were painted on the sides of the building. The area was like a commission house area, but it still looked kind of nice. The drivers told us to be wary of the kids who would come out of the houses and throw stones, and if we heard them honking their horns to run back to the cars as fast as possible... Still not exactly sure if he was joking or not... We got back into the cabs, and went to the peace wall. Which is an absolutely gigantic wall that still stands, to separate the Protestant and the Catholic sides of town. There was graffiti all down the wall, and we were encouraged to add our own piece (and peace) to the wall. While the drivers were talking to us there, someone on the other side of the wall threw a glass bottle over the wall. Because it was so high, it smashed on the other side of the road, but the drivers subtlely made us move closer to the wall... Apparently that's a common occurrence... Next we stopped in the Catholic (Irish) side of town, Falls, to look at their murals. They were much more varied, and didn't only relate to the troubles of the area, but to troubles taking place in other countries, under similar repressive circumstances. It was a very informative tour, well worth doing. Wish we had a chance to do the black cab tour in Derry too! We got back to the hostel and everyone packed up their things to get back on the bus to go to Dublin. We were going to stay in the area, so we said our goodbyes to everyone, except Mel, who wasn't going to Dublin either, and waved goodbye to the big green bus. After checking our washing, which STILL wasn't dry, after drying all night (I think that's a broken dryer!), we headed down the street to grab some lunch with Mel. We went to a little Mexican takeout place, and had some absolutely massive and delicious burritos! We definitely overate there! One between two would've been plenty! Then we headed into the city to check out the bus times to get to Ballycastle. We spent a little while trying to figure out how to get to there, as it was a Sunday and there weren't any buses running! We figured out that maybe we could get to Port Rush, but not to Ballycastle. So we went back to the hostel to pack our bags, and Darren called the hostel we had booked that night. The guy at the hostel was super nice, and told us to get on a train to Ballymoney, and his wife would pick us up! (have I said the Irish are SUPER friendly!?) so we packed up quick as we could and started to walk back to the station. On the way, the guy called back, to give us directions to a closer station in Belfast for us to get to too! So we got to Botanic Station and bought our tickets with 5 minutes to spare, then jumped on the train. The train was pretty full, so we had to sit separately. Darren was across from me, next to a bunch of weirdos! He got chatting to them, and they were nice enough, but very strange. They were showing him all these extreme loyalist videos and that, and one had Union Jack earrings in too. About an hour and a half in we got to Ballymoney and jumped off the train. We called the lady, Clare, who was picking us up, and met her and her kids out the front of the station. We piled into the SUV and headed out to Ballycastle. The kids were very cute, and all really tired, as they'd had a weekend away with school. The little boy in the front was falling asleep the whole time, and kept dropping the phone he was playing with. We eventually got to Ballycastle and Clare showed us up to the room. It was a 3 bed dorm, and it was more like a hotel than a hostel, aside from the shared bathroom. The room was spacious, and we had real beds! We lay down on the beds, and decided it was nap time. Real beds!! When we woke up again, it was 9pm! So we decided to get up and get some dinner. We went for a walk up the street, and poked our heads into a few different pubs and restaurants, and ended up at a new Asian place. They had a great deal on a 2-course meal, which was amazing! All through dinner though, we were making fun of Lyle, who was eating with one hand, and had his phone in the other all night, talking to the girl from the night before! After dinner we walked back down the street to go back to the hostel, but ended up walking past to have a look at the beach. We walked along the bank, across the bridge and out onto the sand. The little town looked very pretty, all lit up, from out there. After that we headed back to the hostel and got back into bed. (Real beds!!)
