Kya Travels
I woke up this morning and left Darren sleeping and went out. I walked around past a few travel agent kind of shops and went into one where the guy spoke English and asked about my options for getting to Valencia that day. There were a few options, but the easiest one was fully booked, so he recommended I find the train station. I got directions then headed down that way. I passed the bus station first so thought I'd go check that out first. They had a bus, but it takes 15 hours, leaving at 10pm, so it would be way too late anyway. So then I wandered up to the train station and asked them. The guy there had an option with three changeovers, arriving around 3am, but it was crazy expensive, so after stopping at an Internet cafe to try find another way, I went back to the hostel and woke Darren up. I think the only way we're gonna get there is if we hire a car. So we packed our bags and headed out to the Avis centre behind the hostel and got a car. I was so annoyed, because we could've just flown pretty much straight to Valencia for the price the travel has cost us, and we would've saved so much time!! Damn it! But anyway, we made it in the end! We got in our little Volkswagen Polo and Darren took the first go at driving on the 'wrong' (or right!) side of the road! It was pretty crazy and stressful, because your perception's all out of whack, and he had to get use to his lane placement while trying to navigate these really small streets to get out of the town and trying to remember to stay on the right and who to give way to! And to top it off, it was a manual! Eventually we got out of town and onto the highway where it was slightly easier to relax and get our bearings on the road! We cruised down the highway past some beautiful beachside towns and took what I think was the scenic route down one section which went right by the beach but wasn't a highway anymore, but residential streets, with ten million roundabouts! An hour or so in we had a stop at maccas (shame!) because we hadn't eaten yet, and got a burger each, then continued up the highway. As the hours rolled on, the scenery changed as we headed inland a bit, to big rocky mountains that we drove through, with heaps and heaps of olive farms. It was quite a beautiful drive once you got over the fact you were driving! We were around the halfway point (about 4 hours in), when Darren's medication started kicking in and made him fuzzy and sleepy, so we pulled off the road at the next exit where we found a little restaurant in the middle of nowhere in the mountains. We got a bite to eat there (we didn't really know what we had ordered until it came out!), omelette with cheese and tomatoes, then I took the keys and tried my hand at this whole driving thing! I think I got the better end of the deal because it was literally highway the whole way there, so it was pretty easy for me. We drove the rest of the way in (listening to some Tiana FM!), and finally arrived in Valencia at around 10:30pm! As I followed the GPS to the airport, there must have been a lot of new roads, because it kept having to recalculate itself and didn't know where it was going so the last bit was a bit stressful again! We ended up swapping drivers again so I could navigate and finally made it in and dropped off the car. We turned in the keys then jumped in a taxi to our hotel, where we checked in and went up to our room where we were very appreciative of our quiet room and comfortable beds, and went straight to sleep, to get ready for our early start the next morning!
