Kya Travels
We woke up this morning, got ready and went down to the oktagon (pretty much just a massive octagonal intersection) to meet Joe, then together we walked into the city. We walked around a little bit to find somewhere for lunch, and had a look at a few menus before sitting down at a place called Murci. I got a Thai salad and the boys both got pasta, and it was all pretty yummy. We had a chat and exchanged some funny videos to look up, then when we were finished we paid our bill and headed off. We had a quick look in a souvenir shop, but they didn't have very good stickers, so we kept going to Vörösmarty Square which was the meeting point for the free walking tour. We were a little early, so we walked around the block then went back. We signed up, then three of the guides stood on the fountain and did a welcome speech thing to the absolutely massive group of people there. Before they finished, Joe decided to leave (he's not big on the whole walking tour thing) so we said bye to him, then got split into groups for the tour. First, we walked down to the river, where we got a history lesson on Hungary and Budapest (did you know it's suppose to be pronounced BudapeSHt? And Buda and Pest used to be different towns?) and learnt about all the people who had occupied Hungary - the Turkish, Austrians and Russians - and how Hungary always seemed to pick the wrong side for any wars! We had a nice view over the river where we could see the Buda side (we were in Pest!) and our guide told us about a few of the landmarks we could see from there that we weren't going to visit with the tour. Darren needed to go to the toilet, so he went into a restaurant to try use one, while I waited outside to watch which way the tour group went! Unfortunately they charged for use of the toilet, and we had no change, so we kept walking up the direction the group had gone. Darren ran into a cafe while I listened to the end part of the guides talk about the architecture, and a flood that had devastated the city. They moved on again before Darren was back, so I watched the direction they walked again, then we caught up just as they were about to go to the next stop. We walked past the massive St Stephens Basilica, then down to the river again. There we got a bit of information about local cuisine, and she showed us a few pictures of the food. (Note to self: must try langos!) Next we got a little language lesson, where we learnt the basics; yes, no, thank you, hello and goodbye. Funniest thing was that hello sounded like seeya, and goodbye sounded like hello!! That's gonna mess with me!! From there we crossed a bridge to Buda and climbed up heaps and heaps of stairs to the top of the hill. There was an amazing view over Pest and the river from up there, you could clearly see the St Stephens Basilica, and the cool looking gothic style parliament building with all its spires and cool stuff. We walked past a massive wine festival that was happening up there too, which looked cool. We might have to come back to check that out one day! We walked along the top of the hill past some really old castle ruins, then across to another massive church, the Matthias Church. It was a pretty cool looking place, with this beautiful colorful tiled roof and spire, as well as a massive white tower as well. We got a group photo there and some info on the church then we went down to a little garden-like section with a few picnic tables where we were going to end the tour. To end it, the guide gave us some tips, tricks and tourist traps for our stay in Budapest, including things like never say thank you before getting your change, or it means 'keep the change', and not to use taxis unless they have been called for you, and not to accept 200 florint notes, as they're out of production, and a few other good ones. After that, we waited until everyone else had tipped and gone, then she gave us and another guy, Tim, some recommendations for places to eat for vegetarians! We tipped her then headed off with Tim. We wandered around the area around the church, checking out the amazing views and getting a few photos, then went to have a look inside the church, but it was closed already. We didn't realize how late it had gotten! So we headed down and started to make our way down to the river again, but didn't know exactly where we were going, so we just headed on all the roads leading down and hoped! In doing this, we accidentally came across one of the vegan places we'd been recommended, so we had a look inside at the prices, then continued down to the river. We ended up halfway between two bridges, so we walked along the riverbank for a bit, dodging bicycles, then walked over the bridge and up towards the basilica. From there we found the metro station and found the tiny little shop where we had been recommended to pick up the best Langos in town! So we ordered one. It was like this almost sweet type of dough, stretched out then deep fried until it was golden, then spread with sour cream and cheese. So unhealthy, but sooo delicious! We sat on a bench and shared one between us (Tim got a whole one), then we said goodbye to him, as he was getting on a metro to get to his hotel, and we walked back up to our hostel. We went upstairs, and went to bed, meaning to have a snooze before possibly catching Joe for a drink, but ended up sleeping the whole night through.
