Kya Travels
We got a bit of a sleep in today, then went for a walk into town to the Wenceslas Square, where we retraced our steps from the other day to find the vegetarian restaurant we had passed the other day. We found it without too much trouble and went inside. It was a buffet style, that goes by weight, so we just got one plate to share, because we didn't know how much it was going to cost us! We shared our plate of food, which was pretty nice, but nowhere near as good as our other place near our hostel! It's still the winner! Over lunch we had a look at the map we had gotten from the hostel which had lots of little descriptions of heaps of places around the town. So we looked through there to find some places we might like to check out, then went for a walk to find this little garden that's hidden in the middle of the city. We found it, and it was quite nice, but crowded, and we didn't find the ice cream shop we had read was close by! From there we walked through the old town towards the old town square to check out the prices of an Indian restaurant that we'd passed the other day. (We haven't had Indian for ages!) As we walked through the old town square we saw these buskers, dressed in what I'm assuming is traditional bohemian outfits, playing some pretty cool music. They almost looked like they should either be on a pirate ship or in a heavy metal band. It was cool! One lady thought they were so cool that she went in the circle and started dancing, then played with the bass players ponytail while he was playing! It was so funny, and the band were loving it! Hilarious. When it was almost 3pm, we joined the massive crowd of tourists checking out the astronomical clock, which, every hour has a little skeleton statue who pulls a string which opens some little windows, and you can see little figures of the 12 apostles passing by the little windows. Once they've all passed a golden crow crowed, then the windows shut, and a trumpeter started playing a short refrain from the other side of the tower, and that was the end of the ceremony. It was pretty cool, because it was built soooo long ago, but its a funny tourist attraction, as it lasts like two minutes maximum, and so many people wait around every hour just to see it! After we went around the back to spot the trumpeter, we wandered down to the river to slowly start the trek back, and passed these guys selling river cruise tickets for about 300Kc (~$15), so we thought... Why not? We bought a ticket and he took us around the block and down to the dock where we were shown onto a boat and given a hot drink and a beer each. When a few more people got in the boat, we set off and the guide gave us some history and information about things and the various buildings and that, that we could see from the boat. A lot of it we had already learnt from our walking tour, but it was still cool to get a different perspective. We learnt about the hunger wall, which we could see climbing up the hill in the forest. Apparently in the time of King Charles IV, there was a problem with lots of people starving, so the King, rather than giving handouts, commissioned them to build this wall, which had no purpose, and paid them for it, so they didn't go hungry. He's one of my favourite kings I've heard about I think! We went down a cute little canal, which is in the area called Venice (so original!). It had some pretty restaurants on the canal which was cool. We went past Prague's 'beach' too, which was a tiny tiny stretch of rocky sand filled with swans and a few people. After the hour was up the boat went back and docked, and we got off and continued to head back to the hostel. Instead of crossing the normal bridge, this time we crossed the famous Charles bridge, which was absolutely packed with tourists!! We crossed over, then went down and walked through the Mediterranean markets, which was full of yummy looking food, cheeses, olives and wines, then walked through a garden section on our way back. When we got back to the other bridge, we crossed back over to go to the supermarket, where we wandered for a while trying to find what might be the cheapest dinner option. We ended up buying a bunch of stuff for pasta, then stopped by the local supermarket near our hostel for cheap wine and cheese again, then went back to the hostel. When we got back we hung out in the kitchen with Joe, and I cooked up the pasta while Darren played guitar. We had some wine and cheese, and when it was ready, shared our pasta with Joe, then spent a very quiet night chilling out and catching up on wifi time before heading to bed early. Darren ended up getting up again after being woken up by our new room mate, an older lady, rustling through her stuff and switching the lights on and off for ages! After he got up, he hung out with Joe and a girl from the other room, Laura, until they came back to bed around 4am!!
