Budapest Day One
We had an easy morning wondering around Pecs. Not much was open so we headed back to our accommodation, loaded the car and headed off.
We drove through some amazing countryside seeing a sea of yellow with field after field of sunflowers. Nelly took us on a beautiful journey and we soon arrived in Budapest. After a cup of tea we headed out to start exploring.
Another amazing town steeped in history. We walked along the river seeing all the river cruise boats docked. Across the river we could see the citadella, the palace and many other exciting things to explore.
We walked across the chain bridge, famous because it was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Budapest in 1849. Not far from the chain bridge we found the shoes on the Danube promenade. It honours the Jews who were ordered to remove their shoes before being shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross Militianmen. There aren't a whole lot of words one can say in response. It is one thing to read about the events in history books, it is another altogether to stand where these events took place.
Our journey home took us through some of the back streets; past cafes - most with live music, and finally onto our road. It took well over an hour and the sun was almost set. I am glad we found our way.
We spent HUF490 on a 500ml bottle of soft drink as our water had long run out and we enjoyed a tangy but lovely mint and lemon gelato. All up it was a for filling day.
The plan tomorrow is to invest in the Big Bus hop on hop off tickets and explore and possibly go and see the ballet Giselle.
Until tomorrow...
