Denmark
What an interesting ferry ride. We began half an hour late, then after just 15mins the ferry did a 180 turn and went straight back to port. There was a medical emergency and someone was rushed off. We retired to our cabin for a hot chocolate. By 9:15pm we re underway again and we clambered back upstairs, much colder but with a beautiful setting sun. We explored the on board shop (bought some chocolate) and then headed back to the cabin for showers and bed.
Sleeping was interesting...or almost non existent. I think we all woke up with every movement....how did people ever sleep on waterbeds?
Departing the ferry we made our way towards Viborg in search of a open air museum. The tourist information place was really helpful and back in a country with reasonable prices, we all did some shopping while we were there. We decided to check out the church while we were in town and are so glad we did. It was amazing. The whole church was painted with frescoes depicting all the major events throughout the bible (old and New Testament). They were completed between 1900 and 1913. We seriously walked around the church naming every single picture. It's the first church I've seen where the images actually made sense.
We all left on a high and headed for Den Gamble By, the open air museum. It contains 75 historical buildings that have been collected from all over Denmark and reconstructed on this sight. They dated back to the 1700's and to put it briefly...mum was in cute building heaven (for anyone who doesn't yet know she collects little houses and has quite an extensive collection). It was pretty cool. They even had people dressed up in period costume and doing life as they would have. We bought some bread and sweet things from the old bakery (from the bakers wife) and explored the toy museum as well as wondered around all the different displays. They had everything from musical instruments to copper saucepans, old books to china and cutlery.
From there we made a beeline for Copenhagen. I had a turn of driving, having avoided all those scary tiny roads in Norway. I even drove over the Great Belt Fixed Link. A bridge that links Funen (where Odense is) to Zealand (where Copenhagen is). The first part of the bridge is a box girder bridge and is 18m long. It joins the suspension bridge which is 1.628m long and was 60m above sea level at the highest point. It was pretty fun to drive, though when we hit the toll we were a little shocked $47AUD to drive across a bridge....but it was worth it.
We are now in a hostel and we've spent the night planning and making decisions and working out the next few days. Mum kindly reminded me that we only have about 6hrs sleep left so I think that may have been a subtle hint to hurry up...lol
