Thinking we would be really organised we booked a hostel before leaving Kuala Lumpur which came with a free pick up from the airport. We smugly sauntered out of the airport and raced off to the Beach Lodge (sounds lovely doesn't it?!) only to find the hostel didn't quite live up to expectations.... to start with you had to climb 8 very smelly and disgusting flights of stairs to reach what was basically someone's flat with two rooms converted into dorms. A newborn baby cried day and night, random family members took up all the sofas in the lounge / TV room, nappies and babygro's hung from the ceiling and a toddler tried her best to trip you as you headed to the family bathroom! Needless to say we only stayed a night before moving elsewhere...
Kota Kinabalu (KK for short) is an ok if somewhat grimey little seaside town. We had a lovely meal from the seafront market, sitting with the locals, for only a pound (bargain!!) and indulged in cocktails as a treat!
Whilst in KK we decided to head up to Mount Kinabalu to see the National Park. We booked a one day tour with a Malaysian couple who never spoke and a really sweet couple from Hong Kong. The guy looked and sounded exactly like the guy from 'Heroes'! We passed through some stunning scenery and walked some pretty jungle trails at the national park before heading up to Poring Hotsprings to walk the 41 meter high canopy walk and bathe in the sulphur hotsprings. Those of you who know how much Kim hates heights will realise what a trauma the canopy walk was....!
