A bus, plane, another bus, an overnight stay in Kuala Lumpur and another 5 hour bus ride and we arrived in the Cameron Highlands, in the town of Tanah Rata. This area was used by the English in colonial days when it got too hot in the lowlands and the temperature is noticeably cooler (even a little bit cold at night!) The area is around 4000-6666 feet above sea level and covered in forest, strawberry farms and tea plantations.
We did a half day tour visiting a tea plantation, strawberry farm, butterfly farm (where Mark held a huge poisonous scorpion- the fool!), honey farm, rose centre (with fantastic views) and a chinese temple. We also took advantage of the cool weather to walk some of the jungle trails to see waterfalls. One of the trails was quite hard work and we found ourselves shimmying under fallen trees and climbing natural ladders made of tree roots to reach the summit of the hill which was crowned with a watch tower with fantastic views - which you couldn't actually climb due to the state of disrepair... still a good work-out!
We have also taken full advantage of the starwberry crops - sampling fresh strawberry milkshakes, cream teas, strawberry scones, dried strawberries and strawberry ice-cream. Good job we've walked alot to burn it all off!
