Thursday 3rd September -Cathedral & Tower
We had sort of rushed through the palace and we left J&P to meet up later. Jan bought a charm for her bracelet and I bought a new pair of sun glasses.
We went back in through the Iron Gate and I left Jan to look at all of the coral necklaces whilst I went and paid to go into the Mausoleum of Diocletian and the Tower.
The Mausoleum was converted into a cathedral in 653AD by the first bishop of Split. They got rid of all the pagan worship stuff that the Romans had installed. The interior of the Cathedral is famous for the frescos but they were hard to photograph as over the ages they have become very dull with all of the vibrant colours faded out of them.
The Tower was 227 steps up and the same number down again. The initial steps were stone with a rise of about 500mm and the passage was so narrow and the ceiling so low it was very difficult to climb.
The view over Split from the top was brilliant and lots of photos were taken from up here.
We met up down the bottom and Jannie had her heart set on a coral necklace but alas the stall owners didn't have Visa.
We bumped into J&P and walked back to the ship for a late lunch as it was so hot. The walk took about 15minutes and we were extra hot by the time we arrived back.
Rest, reading, snooze and then it was time for pre dinner drinks and then dinner. After dinner we attended the Art Auction on board but it was a bit of a crock and all the prices were super inflated but a few sold.
Bed and the ship are underway but you wouldn't know it.
