Thursday 3rd September - Peristyle Square
We first headed through the Iron Gate into the city and were greeted by a crypt style alley way with all the stalls selling mostly souvenirs and mainly coral beds and necklaces. We followed our guide through and up the stairs into the Peristyle Square which was and still is the main open square within the Palace and is a central meeting place for all.
The space is surrounded by a series of columns, six of which are made of pink marble and that is what the Emperor decreed as his colour and no-one else was allowed to have that colour.
We headed out of the palace and went back to the bus. It was getting hotter and shade was at a premium. The bus trip took us passed the new stadium and a beach and really was just a ride around the outskirts of Split.
We headed back to the city for a beer but first we had to change some Euros into Kona as although Croatia is part of the EU they still use their own currency same as Britain does.
The local beer was good and cold.
Split got its name from the fact that when it was first discovered it was covered in gorse and the name for gorse is Asplatatus. There are 1244 islands on the Croatian Coast.
