Thursday 3rd September - Split
We awoke and the ship was just docking in the harbour at Split at the same time and we headed for breakfast.
All ready for another day and we went down onto the wharf where we took a shore based excursion consisting of a 1 hour walk through the Diocletian Palace and a 1 hour bus trip around the outskirts of Split. We boarded the bus and it went about 500 metres from the wharf to the Southern Wall of the Old Town and then we all hopped off.
We were doing the walk first and our guide Monique explained what we were doing and how long it would take and to follow her.
Split goes back to 3000BC and has had a number of rulers but the main influence was by the Roman Emperor Diocletian who in the 4th Century AD erected the Palace which began as the imperial residence and a fortified camp is today an intriguing maze of narrow cobblestone streets, where pre-Romanesque Churches live alongside Gothic Chapels, museums, art galleries, restaurants and bustling cafes and a fair bevy of intriguing shops and stalls.
