Friday 4th September - Dubrovnik
We were up early and caught the shuttle into the Old own of Dubrovnik where we were dropped at the Pile Gate which is one of two gates into the Old City. Before we headed into the Old Town we walked from the street across Brsalje Square to a low wall which gave an unobstructed view of the sea and of Fort Lovrijenic to the right and the 16th century Bokar Fortress. These days it is used during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival as a Shakespearean Theatre with well known actors playing parts in performances.
We crossed the wooden drawbridge which in olden times would have been raised to protect the city.
We purchased our tickets for the walk on the wall. We climbed the steep stairs to the Minceta Tower at the top of the wall. The wall was built between the 13th and 17th centuries and these great walls encompass the entire Old Town and are 3 to 19 feet thick and 6200 feet long and there are some 1029 steps up or down.
The first thing that we found was that everyone walked in the same direction, which was good as in parts there would have been no passing areas.
We walked early to avoid some of the heat of the latter part of the day but it was still hot but the views were magnificent.
All the stone slabs conjure up the stone masons putting block after block in place with such precision, its mind boggling.
