Friday 4th September - Streets of Dubrovnik
Right at the bottom of the wall steps there is the tall dome of Onofrios Fountain that people were filling water bottles at the numerous spouts. The water flows into the city via an aqueduct from the Dubrovnik River 12kms away.
The Fountain was completed in 1444 and was destroyed by an earthquake in 1667. The fountain was also used extensively during the siege in 1991-92 when the city was in lockdown.
We walked down the narrow streets towards the Port where we were besieged by a couple of girls who wanted to sell us the next boat trip. We paid €10 and were told our boat was about to go so we climbed on board and together with the other 2 couples were taken for a trip out of the port and around the base of the fort and then back tone of the many islands that are dotted around the coast.
Then we hugged the opposite coast back to the port and were told about the many 5 star hotels side by side along the sea. Most had very elaborate umbrella and beach loungers and one hotel so elaborate with a blue dome cost €6000 a night and we heard that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Bruce Willis and the Japanese Prince had stayed here recently.
Our skipper who was a lovely man told us he moonlighted as a musician and played a mandolin at these places at night.
