Not such a good day today...I had my wallet stolen by a pickpocket. We had decided to travel to Versailles by train and bought tickets at Gare du Nord to travel via the RER B to Saint Michel - Notre Dame where we would change trains to the RER C. When we boarded, it was already fairly crowded but suddenly there was a big rush and people kept pushing on behind us. I was initially pushed away from Gail and Chelsea but somehow managed to edge closer to them. We found ourselves pinned in a corner of the vestibule by about 6 big Nigerians but they still kept me a bit separated with their big arms in the way.
At the next stop, they all started pushing and shoving to get off and making a commotion before the doors had even opened. I was swept off onto the platform in the crush and was concentrating on holding on to my backpack which was caught up in the mass of bodies.
Eventually, I managed to get back on the train and Gail asked if I still had my wallet which had been in the front pocket of my shorts. Sure enough it was gone...we were in disbelief.
We got off at Saint Michel -Notre Dame and the first official we could report to was in the ticket office. She gave us directions to the main office which was back down in to the subway and up again. At that office we were directed to the police but we had to catch another train to Maubert Mutualite.
Eventually, we found the police station but had difficulties with the language. We were given an English complaint form to fill in and then had to sit and wait. While this was happening, I wanted to report the credit cards to the bank but found that the credit on my phone had run out.
After about half an hour I was called in for an interview with a police officer who could speak reasonable English. He was very good humoured and told us that Paris could be very dangerous for tourists who think Paris is all just 'Peace and Love' and even he would be extremely careful on the metro and zip up all his pockets.
After we finished at the police station, I managed to make contact with the bank to stop the cards. By this time over an hour had passed since the incident and it turned out that that the thieves had already managed to steal thousands. For some reason, the don't seem to use PIN codes over here so card security is near non-existent.
The light has dimmed in the 'City of Lights'.
