My blogs seen rather tame at the moment as we spend a lot of time driving and seeing that there is almost no traffic there are long stretches of nothingness. We counted 22 minutes between southbound cars at one point. We have only encountered half a dozen cars northbound with us. Even the road trains are far apart not seeing but maybe six of those in a day. **
*Our sites are set on getting to Coober Pety after Woolmera. Coober Pety is about 4-5 hours north of Woolmera and is a Opal mining town. Half of the residents live in homes in the ground which is great as the stay about 70 degrees year round. We passed several dead kangaroos and cows along the highway today we didn't want to hit a cow as that would have been the end of us for sure. Driving at night here is risky business and our camper contract states no driving at night. Also if you roll your car or if its stolen they seem to end up on the side of the road here badly beaten and stopped.
***Once in Coober Pety we set up camp and had dinner in the camper of some left over spaghetti. Trying hard to keep costs down we had breakfast in the camp kitchen with about 1000 dead bugs from the night before that had committed suicide in the kitchen. We did some laundry and set out on a midday tour of the town and surrounding underground homes and mines. It was hot and the flies were bitting so we showered and splurged for a pizza in town. ***
Back at camp we enjoyed a nice evening chatting about the days adventures and cool evening under the stars. Then it happened! Out of nowhere a huge wind came up and as our awning was out, the wind gripped the things and suddenly we were now under full sail! Before Joy and I could get out of our chairs it had broken the main support which came down with a thud on my forehead.I yelled for Joy to "PUSH THE BUTTON!" To retract it she slipped on the step I'm yelling as now I have a cut on my arm from this flapping sail. All hell has broken loose a guy next door sent his son over to help grab it but the damage was done. Our awning was trashed. We did manage to get it retracted and the next morning bought some zip ties to hold it in while traveling. Our camper company said that once we get to Brisbane they will repair it at our cost so there goes our cost cutting dinners in the camper, phooey! *
**Bandaged up we headed again northbound towards Uluru putting in another 375 miles under our belts we arrived at our stop for the night a Roadhouse called Kulgera. It came highly recommended on our Wiki Camps app. Pulling in it was very hot again but we had a pool which was perfect temperature and felt really good after today's long drive. You have to remember that Joy and I can easily drive these distances but we are working in several stops to actually look at things. Soon it would be happy hour and we could have a beer with those locals we love to chat with. **
*Soon to bed we were rocked awake by the mystery huge wind gust again but this time nothing as our sail was already broke, it rain most of the night washing the Coober Pety mud off of our camper and in the morning we were mud free but as luck would have it there was a final rinse in the coming days drive. Off to Uluru we go!!
