Uluru at last! After a final leg of four hours we arrived at the Ayers Rock campground. Now where did we see Uluru so we buttoned up our motorhome, Joy and I have got it done to a science now. I jump out with the keys and unlock the storage areas and get the electric line hooked up. Now I lave t he engine on the motorhome running while I do this as it's usually very hot in the living quarters. Once plugged in I jump back in and start the main a/c unit. *
**Meanwhile Joy has been covering the windshield and passenger windows with towels and a windshield screen we bought. I then unpack the chairs, flip flops and welcome mat. Then Joy turns off the motor as the a/c is blowing cold and I lower the step on the side. And until the other day I would roll out the awning but that is now wire tied and going nowhere. - [ ]
*** Once we settle in we walk through o the shower blocks to see how clean/dirty they maybe. The kitchen is next not that we use that too much but morning coffee for me is easier and Joy has whipped up some spaghetti and tacos in the camp kitchen and a great morning of pancakes. ***. As we walked back to our home we not tired a small walkway up a hill and decided that was worth a look. As we approached the summit there it was Ayers Rock off in the distance. It was a little gloomy so we decided that was our look for the day at the Rock. The next morning we would get a closer look. - [ ] **
*. We decided that we would go to Uluru on Australia Day instead so we chose to go to the Olgas rocks sister to Uluru. So with Uluru square in our windshield we made a hard right and drove the extra 35 km to the Olgas. They are much bigger then the Rock and can be seen just about anywhere the Rock can. We chose a hike in a valley called "Valley of the Winds". *
**. If you know Joy and I you also know that we are not known for our fitness. With that in mind we still set out to do a 7km hike into the valley. Up and down the trail went, over streams and through them. Everywhere we turned was even better then the last. At the final lookout we took a picture and turned back. Three and a half hours later we returned to our motor home only to notice the map that showed that we had actually turned around at the halfway point and not done a entire loop. Never the less we had done 7km which is really a lot more with the climbs. Back in our motor home we had a little lunch and did one more walk for the day into the Gorge of the Olgas only an hour hike. Tomorrow we will head to Uluru. - [ ]
***. Australia Day 2017 found us awake at 5 am to do the Sunrise watch at Uluru. It was good but I am sure it has been better as we had some low clouds. Back to camp we had breakfast and tied on our shoes and off to Uluru we went. We decided after the long day before that we would bike around Uluru and that turned out to be a great ideal as it was hot. Many nooks and crannies to explore as you travel around the rock. It still took two hours and with that many pictures were took. Some areas are off limits for cameras as sacred. There were very few people we met along the way as this January being the slow season. - [ ]
*** Back at camp we made plans for our sunset at Uluru but in came the rain and that was a bust. Seeing Uluru for the first time was up there with seeing The Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera House, Big Ben or the Balboa trees in Madagascar for the first time its like you can't believe it there just in front of you. - [ ] **
*. Without that said we had to make a decision, to go to Kings Canyon or not? It was decided that we were just on schedule and that a stop at the canyon would throw off our plans. So we passed on the Canyon and off to Alice Springs we go. There are camels in our Future.....
