After leaving Hanmer Springs we headed cross country west to a little place called Punakaiki , I had a really uncomfortable nights sleep in Hanmer springs so on route to Punakaiki we brought some blow up beds from a place called the warehouse where we got our tent etc, it's really cheap.
When we arrived to Punakaiki we put our tent up in a nice spot by the beach and mountains, we had a drive to the pancake rocks, they are formations of rock eroded by the sea and look like pancakes they were pretty cool.
We was going to have a BBQ but the nearest super market was an hour away so we just had a pub dinner which was busy as it is the only place for miles but was nice food . ( the South Island is so rural you can drive for hours from town to town).
We both had a brilliant night sleep was so much more comfortable on the blow up beds, we packed up in the morning and headed to Franz Josef ( Glacier country ) which is about 3 hours drive south on the west coast.
As we was driving it started to rain and as the drive went on it got heavier and heavier, when we arrived it was foggy and raining hard, we couldn't camp so checked into a room, baring in Mind we now have a car full of camping equipment which we have bought arrrrggggg
We couldn't really do anything outside due to the weather so we headed to the glacier hot pools which was wicked, they were 40 degrees pools set in the rain forest.
When we come back we done a BBQ, the rain wasn't going to stop us doing that, food was amazing we had burger , chicken and sausages. Munch!!
Today we got up and it was still raining but we didn't what to waste the day doing nothing so we done a glacier walk, we were planning to do a helihike which took you to the top of the glacier and a hike through the glacier itself which would have been cool but due to the weather the tours were cancelled. We were gutted!!!!
The walk was about 2 hours which was good we didn't get to wet as had umbrellas and rain coats on this time lol.
Going to do another BBQ tonight, then tomorrow we are headed south to Lake Wanaka and plan to stay for 3 nights so hopefully the weather is a bit better.
Fingers crossed.
