Kate's Chronicles
Having only passed through the capital by bus on my way to the school I thought it was finally time I actually visited what many call the "green city". It is easy to see why....parks and gardens flourish throughtout the city.
Nanning has a population of 6.8 million people so is still not a big city by Chinese standards but it was an adventure in itself getting there and getting around by myself with my limited language skills. Lots of hand gesturing, simple word usage (by me) and drawing seemed to get the job done. At least I got to see some of the city and back to Baise in one piece - much to the amazement of my students. They could not believe I would attempt a trip like that on my own, especially being female.
To be honest a city is a city but my big excitement for the day was finding "The Pantry" a western food store on Minzu Boulevard. Can you believe I live in a city of 3.8 million and cannot buy cheese!!! Needless to say my splurge for the day was a nice block of cheese which has never tasted soooo good!!! I suspect there will be a few weekend trips to Nanning even if its only to stock up on a few essentail items like...cheese
I ran out of time but I also found some English speaking DVDs. Once again in my city I cannot find ANY DVDs in English......not even with English subtitles :(
Reminder to self....next time be sure to pack some DVDs as it gets a tad boring with only one English speaking TV channel. Dont fall over with shock Matt but I'm even trying to work out how to download movies!!!! Willlet you know if/when I succeed being such an IT genius!!!
Have to say this holiday is turning out to be quite an adventure with the chance to see some of the local sights that are completely off the tourist track as yet.

Ray H Just a suggestion Kate. If you do shopping you MUST take a local with you, if possible. This is because they can negotiate unbelievable prices for you. (Like starting at 50% and then down even further). Tell them what you like and then wander down the street to look at other things whilst your companion goes in to do the deal, without the trader knowing it's for a foreigner. Trader still happy with outcome due to the intense competition.
Kate Hi Ray, thanks for the advice and I will certainly be using it in the bigger cities. Surprisingly enough I can haggle harder than the locals here and both teachers and students are amazed at the prices I am paying!!!! But then I love to bargain -see it as a great challenge. I'm even the one who negotiates our taxi fare back to school because I can get a cheaper rate!!!!
Ray H You goooooooooo girl go then! Bargains are real bargains in PR China!
Lisa For watching some good movies and popular TV series you can head to PPTV. You don't need to download - they are streamed online. The site is in Chinese but there are pictures (like DVD covers). Look for çµè§å§ amongst the choices at the top of and then 欧ç¾. This will get you to the english language TV series. It's very up to date, with episodes only a few days after screening in the States. I've had zero problems with viruses from here. If you need any help, Skype me.
Lisa I see the characters didn't post properly, I'll send them in an email.
