Kate's Travels
Arrived in KL yesterday lunch time after another windy coach journey. Our hotel is right in the heart of China Town and the street of the night market which is nice and bustley but at the moment we are a bit sick of markets and street sellers trying to sell you fake stuff, so it feels a bit like we've seen it all before.
Did a short orientation walk around the (very hot!) city. Kuala Lumpur means 'dirty confluence' as it was established when tin miners set up workshops at the confluence of the river. We saw the original site, whcih is also where the orignial (but no longer) national mosque is.
The main sqaure is surrounded by gorgeous architecture, from Tudor to Islamic to Mormon. The main cricket ground next to the main square also has a Tudor pavillion where the British rulers used to watch the cricket from when Malaysia was a colony. Theres also the tallest flag pole in the world. (only so interesting as theres not much you can do with a flag pole, you just look up at a big pole and see a flag at the top...)
That evening we all met and went to the KL tower - the 3rd tallest telecommunications tower in the world which is also an observation tower. We were going to go to the twin towers, but you can only go half way up and so dont get as good a view of the city. The city is lovely from above, there is lots of greenery, and the free audio tour you get with the ticket was really good as it pointed out all the famous buildings and how they came about. Malaysia has 9 royal families!! How that came about i dont know but there you go - a fact for next time you're in the pub.
We watched the sun set and the city lights come on which made the city look totally different and far more beautiful (Im a sucker for cities at night, love them). I didnt take the pic above but it really does look like that, and when we compared before sunset and after sunset pics, the daytime looked far less impressive! (The tower we were in is the tall thin one on the right at the back with the yellow blob on top!)
Had tea in a Reggae bar (as you do in KL) before some much needed sleep after todays early start.
