Kate's Travels
Arrived at the Cameron Highlands at about 2pm after a very windy coach ride! We are high up, about 1500m above sea level i think, and so the climate is very different - just like england!! Which is actually quite nice as we all got to put our jeans and fleeces on for the first time in weeks which was a nice novelty!
We got a mini bus and did a sort of tour of the local attractions. First stop was a rose garden - the biggest in malaysia. It was very pretty but essentailly a garden centre (of which there is the odd one or two at home...) and it was pouring with rain so we were all only so interested in the wet flowers!
Next we went to a strawberry plantation - they are everywhere here - and had the nicest strawberry milkshake while we sheletered from the rain!! There are wasps everywhere though due to the fruit, and Michael nearly ate one as it had found its way into his milkshake!! hehe. They taste quite sour apparantly....urgh.
Then it was on to a tea plantation. There are acres and acres of tea plantations here, all very picturesque and it looks just like on the Tetley adverts!! The one we visited was owned by a Scotsman, who owns BOH
(Best of the Highlands) tea, the biggest selling tea in Malaysia and Singapore (they dont export anywhere else). We were told that they pick the tea all year round, using machines rather than hand nowadays, and the workers live in huts next to the plantation which is all provided for them - not a bad set up!
We went around the tea making factory and then to the cafe where we all had a BOH tea - just like home! We all agreed it was a good cuppa. PLus we were sat drinking it watching the rain so it was as British as you could get in Malaysia!
The final stop was a butterfly house which had loads of insects aswell. I held 2 butterflies (the biggest ones i think iv ever seen), a sick insect and a leaf insect! Will put up pics soon!
Once back at the hotel we dried off and went for a steamboat dinner - essentially a fondu. You get a stock on a burner and put loads of vegetables, meat and fish in it, let it cook for a few minutes and then all help yourselves, adding more and different ingredients each time. Was really nice and a good way of eating together.
A video in the hotel common room rounded off the night - an early start tomorrow to drive to Kuala Lumpur so was nice to just chill out together.
