Happiness Is The Road
It's Christmas Eve. I thought I'd get go and see the Flinders Chase National Park today. It is right at the very western tip of Kangaroo Island and is very beautiful. It was only about 20 kilometres away so it didn't take long to get there. I drove to Weir Cove first and parked the camper there. I could have a nice long walk from here. After doing nothing at all yesterday I needed to stretch my legs. The walk took me along the coast to the lighthouse and onto Admirals Arch. Along the way I was able to see New Zealand fur seals on the rocks below. They were amazing to watch. They were playing in the sea, having great fun and were relaxing and flopping about on the rocks. Admirals Arch was a great sight. It is basically a big archway in the rock right down at the waters edge, quite an incredible sight. I had a look at the lighthouse and read all the interesting information about all the shipwrecks there had been in this area. There were so many sad tales of loss but one story was pretty funny. One ship, the Loch Sloy, got wrecked and lost 30,000 gallons of whisky in casks of varying sizes. A lot of them were carried by the ocean current and cast along the South Australian mainland coast. A number people took advantage of the opportunity to help themselves to free liquor. One man found a huge cask and hid it in the sand hills where he would go daily to get his fill. He ended up in such a state that he swore he could see the Loch Sloy sailing through the dunes after him! The local police tried to trace the stashes of whisky. However, judging by the number of inebriates around during the following months there was more whisky stashed than they realised. When I got back to Cape Weir I had some lunch and then drove to Remarkable Rocks. These are wind sculpted rocks and they looked very striking. It was interesting to see them but it was very busy, tourists everywhere! After that I went on the Platypus Waterholes walk. The platypus were being very elusive though and the only one I saw was a metal one at the beginning of the walk. I had had some great exercise and I was free and happy. I then went back to the camp site. I had some new German neighbours on the camp site but they weren't annoying at all! I had a chat with them and they were really lovely. I just chilled tonight, watched the roos and waited for Father Christmas!!! There were no decorations anywhere, it was hot and it didn't feel like Christmas at all. That didn't bother me in the slightest. Nite nite my excited possums.
