I had a great nights sleep. The driving is making me really tired. Because there's not much traffic and the road is very straight most of the time I think you need more concentration than driving on the busy roads back home and that it why I am so shattered. I left Madura at about 10 which really was too late as I'm going to lose 2 and a half hours at the border today when I go over to South Australian time. I was going to go as far as Nundroo today, about 500 kilometres but decided I didn't want to push it that far with the time loss. I decided instead to go as far as the Nullarbor Road House 370 kilometres away. I made a pit stop for fuel about 100 k's away at Mundrabilla and then ploughed on to the Western Australia/South Australia border just beyond Eucla. I was a bit sad to be leaving WA but really excited to be entering a new State and getting nearer to Adelaide where I'll be picking up Jay! If you're heading west into Western Australia this is where the Fruit & Veg quarantine check point is. Going east the check point for me isn't until Ceduna. In order to stop diseases and pests, particularly fruit fly, from getting between States and ruining their agricultural industry they have a very strict quarantine policy at the border. You are not allowed to take fresh fruit, vegetables, plants or honey inter state. It all felt a bit different beyond the border. The road signs are a little bit different and it somehow felt a bit weird for a while. Across the border though the Nullarbor proper starts. This is the treeless plain. All you can see in each direction as far as the horizon are just little bushes, it is indeed treeless. This region was once part of the ocean floor and is the world's biggest, flattest piece of limestone, covering an area of approximately 200,000 square kilometres and is up to 300 metres thick. The weather got a lot cloudier over the border and the temperature dropped quite significantly. It was getting quite chilly which I wasn't expecting on the Nullarbor. The highway now went very close to the sea and it was great to catch sight of the majestic Southern Ocean again. I stopped at the Great Australian Bight to have a look at the cliffs. From here it wasn't far to the Nullarbor Road House. It was 2pm when I got here, except it wasn't! With the time difference it was actually 4.30 and time to call it a day driving wise. I had found the driving a bit boring today. The camp site was basically a big open car park with power points. It was quiet though and I got a good spot near the edge looking out over the expanse of bush that is the Nullarbor. I was absolutely knackered and was in bed by 9. I found the noise of the highway and the road trains hurtling past very soothing and I was soon asleep. Just one more day of the Nullarbor crossing to do tomorrow.
