Karoo National Park - Nov 30th to Dec 2nd
This was are first campsite, all looks a bit hectic but everything seemed to be working, it just took a while to get everything out of the back (and even longer to get it all back in, but Paul and Dave are quickly becoming experts!).
The first night went well, the awning came into it's own as it a short storm moved over.We were able to enjoy beer and wine under it's shelter as we watched the odd lightening bolt shatter across the sky in the distance.Melissa, you'd be proud we cracked open a bottle of Haute-Cabriere Champagne with dinner! That was enough for me for the day, exhausted I retired to the roof tent for the first time!
Next morning our old friends the tortoises were back visiting (we'd enjoyed there company in April when we'd been in the park) - see photo album! For Paul and I it had been a relatively comfortable nights sleep - I was impressed with our roof top tent.Unfortunately for Dave and Kaz their blow up mattress had deflated in the night which didn't make for a good nights sleep.
After breakfast we went on a game drive, there are a couple of picks in the album.Didn't see too much game but since our last visit the track had been extended a lot further so we drove on.We saw a couple of klipspringers, some zebra, red hartebeest and some awesome landscapes. At the end of the track we stopped for lunch and put up the awning for some protection against the sun - we made our first mistake here by not pining the awning down.It was very calm with no wind but all of a sudden as I was walking away from the vehicle it wipped up and in seconds the awning was blowing like a sail over the roof………..Paul and Dave managed to get it down but not before the support poles got all bent L
Back at camp while Kaz and I relaxed the boys went about trying to hammer the awning supports back into shape - all credit to them they managed which saved us a pretty penny, it isn't quite as smooth as it used to be but it works and without the awning we'd have not shelter against rain or sun! There second repair attempt to the air mattress wasn't as successful, I think our mattress is a bit old!Thankfully we'd brought along Thermarest's too so these replaced the mattress for the time being.
After all that work it was time for a dip in the pool, a bit cold for my liking but after a bit of prompting I was in!!I'm a bit challenged when it comes to the water compared to the others so I gave my snorkel a go, think I'll need some more practice before we reach Mozambique but I'm sure I'll be fine!
Time for bed again!
