Sundays in Ciudad Bolivar!! After a night full of biting Mosquitos I was up early and ready for our trip to a typical Venezuelan supermarket. I met a Vietnamese guy who is also from Perth and I spent most of the morning chatting with him whilst waiting for the others to get up. My Japanese friends go to bed quite late which means they are also quite late getting up in the mornings. I am really enjoying staying in a hostel again and meeting travelers with all there amazing stories. At 10:30am we were all organized and ready for our supermarket mission; we managed to flag down a collectivo type taxi and all scramble in whilst the locals looked at us in disbelief as if to say what the hell are these crazy people doing here. We made it to the supermarket and it was incredibly busy and unlike any supermarket I have ever visited before. The shelfs were half stocked and standard things like rice, milk, lollies were completely missing. We were told when these things come in people go mad and buy kilos of the stuff selling it all out overnight and leaving half the population without the basics - for example there is no flour and when you buy bread at the bakery your limited to 3 pieces per person. I tried some really interesting dried and preserved fruit typical to Venezuela and brought a bunch of snacks for our upcoming trip to Canaima (just incase we don't get much food). I met a really friendly tourist guide and his wife and chatted with many friendly locals in the supermarket before lining up and waiting over an hour to checkout. When we got back to the hostel Sunny and I went in search of a resteraunt for lunch and unbelievably couldn't find any food as on Sunday nearlly everything is closed and resteraunts shut and finish by 1am. One lady at the roast chicken resteraunt kindly gave me a huge takeaway container of salad for free and so I promised her I would be back tommorow for some chicken. Luckily the hostel makes food and Sonny was able to sort some food out whilst I settled for my salad, avocado and boiled eggs. The heat is incredible here in the day and so we all spent the afternoon and rest of the evening hanging out in the hostel chatting, eating and planning our upcoming travels.
