At 2:30am I was woken up by the other passengers getting their things together and readying themselfs to disembark in Colonia. We waited patiently for the doors to open and then entered the ferry terminal which was also the bus terminal - my first steps in Uruguay were therefor half asleep. I found my bus connection to Montevideo; boarded the bus and then fell straight asleep again. At 5:30am we arrived at the bus terminal in Montevideo and I went about trying to figure out which direction to head in order to get to my hosts apartment. Unfortunately it was raining and still very dark so not the best conditions to be walking 4km in but such is life. I had a very uneasy feeling walking down the streets; maybe because it was the early hours of Saturday morning and many people were drunk or maybe the streets I walked down were not so safe. Either way this made me very aware of my surroundings and put me on high alert ready for anything. I made it to Haileys building no problem and made my way up to the 21st floor - after a quick greeting I climbed into the fold out bed and fell straight back to sleep. When I got up Hailey had also just got so we shared some breakfast and a quick chat before her workmates arrived. Hailey and her workmates were making sign language videos in her apartment for the day so I went out for a wonder and to get a few things for lunch. My first impression of Montevideo is not overly good, partly because it is wet and cold but secondly the old city where I am staying is very dirty and slum-like with a lot of homeless people. I don't feel safe at all here and everyone seems to be looking at me showing that it is not an area frequented by tourists - such a different feeling compared to Buenos Aires. A visit to the supermarket soon confirmed that prices here were much higher then expensive Argentina; 12 eggs for $4, tuna - $3 and meat was double the price. The one positive thing is I have somewhere to stay and amazingly it is inside one of Montevideos biggest tourist attractions the Salvao Palace - palace turned apartment complex and Haileys flat is on the 21st floor 2 shy of the top. In the afternoon when I got back to Haileys we decided to go for a wonder and buy a few things for dinner - however when we were out Hailey got a call from a friend to invite us to a bar. I decided not to go with Hailey as she expected to be out to early morning and so headed back to the flat. After some dinner and not being able to figure out how the hot water for the shower worked I went to bed rather disappointed in my first day in Montevideo.
