Today I had to be up early to make my way to the bus station and on to Ipiales. At about 8am I said my goodbyes to Carolina and headed into the city where the bus terminal was located. I found a company and brought a ticket to Ipiales - now the first thing I discovered was this was not a big bus like I had requested and secondly the bus ticket said to Pasto - the town before Ipiales. I went and asked the guy at ticket booth and he just wrote in Ipiales. I started to feel a bit uneasy now and new this would not be a smooth trip. We boarded the bus an hour later and it was super crammed - all 24 seats taken and absolutely no legroom, at least they had a toilet. The whole journey was horrible to say the least, jam packed, stinking hot and sweating, the road was incredibly windy and the bus driver thought he was a rally driver. My neck and back was killing the whole way and Instead of being 10 hours it turned out being nearlly 13 hours. To go with all that I could barely sleep as the roads were too bad, we arrived at Pasto and were made to change bus and as bad luck would have it the local football match had just finished and the streets were covered in celebrating fans which meant a slow crawl out of the city on the bus - nearly two hours. I arrived at Ipiales late and as expected the driver tried to scam more money out of us for the bus because we were gringos - I told him to stick it and left. I called Alvaro my host who runs the only English institute here in Ipiales and him and his son came and picked me up. He took me back to his place, fed me and gave me a run down of how I would be helping out at the school tomorrow. My main focus should be learning Spanish but this is a nice opportunity to help out at a school and adopt some techniques for learning a language.
