Today was an early start in order to see the sunrise so at 4am we were all up packed and ready to load the vehicle - unfortunately our driver had slept in so we all ended up standing around waiting in the freezing cold for him to pack the wagon. We headed straight out onto the Salar de Uyuni and just made it in time to see the sunrise and what a glorious sunrise it was with a white dessert at its foreground. After some photos and standing around in sheer awe we continued on to the cactus island; an island in the middle of the Salar that is incredibly green and containing thousands of cactus. Not wanting to get ripped off again we decided not to enter and instead walk-around the island- our chef tried to say we were not allowed but we followed the other 50 tourists doing the same thing. It was incredibly scenic even just walking around this strange island in the middle of a salt desert. When we arrived back breakfast was served and boy did they lay it on today; juice, yogurt, cereal, cake and hot drinks (after yesterday's dismal 2 pancakes). After breakfast we had this stupid woman come over and make us pay for having breakfast next to the island - turns out a lot of people didn't want to pay to walk on the island and did as we did so this woman was trying to trick everyone into paying. Next stop was an inactive Volcano where we had to pay a small fee but we did get to see 3500 year old mummies in a cave and in amazing condition. There was an old man there that have an interesting description of the area and the history of the mummies - so we didn't feel as ripped off as yesterday. We then drove back out into middle of Salar for miles and miles and i watched as the driver almost fell asleep a number of times. We pulled up in no particular spot but literally out in the middle of a white dessert and starting taking the famous Salar photos. Some of the guys had brought props like a guitar, toys, Pringles container and other things we could use to creat skewed perspectives of ourselves out on the salt flat. I managed to get a few good shots of handstands and standing out in the middle of the salt flat naked. The last stop was the salt museum which was quite pathetic and really just a market selling salt products and other bits and pieces. For lunch we had fish cakes, vegetable cakes, salad, rice and more coca cola - it's now time to go back to making my own food and eating healthy. The tour finished at the train cemetery where we got some great photos of the old derelict trains and their surroundings. We were then dropped of near the buses in the middle of Uyuni town. The town was dirty, hot and unwelcoming, we managed to get a bus ticket for tommorrow morning leaving at 4am. The guys wanted to get a room and so grabbed the first available one - I however decided to walk around for 3 hours to find the cheapest accomodation (not the smartest idea). However during my adventure I did get to see the entire town and suss out some places for dinner. I finally decided on a place and was promised wifi (which Ofcourse did not work) and I was put in a dorm room but luckily I had it all to myself. I decided to walk around to find others but had no luck so I visited the weekend street markets and eyes off some more dinner options. I finally ran into the guys and they were planning an early night so to get some sleep before the early morning bus ride. I went and brought some tomatos and a couple of pieces of roast chicken and took it back to my hotel to eat whilst watching a travel documentary. By 10pm I decided I better hit the hay and try get some sleep.
