My bus to Chile was leaving at 4am this morning so I needed to be up very early this morning to organize my things, grab a hot drink and make my way to the bus station. When I arrived the others were there waiting and it wasn't long before the bus came and we were all loaded up ready to go. The road to the boarder was all gravel and very rough but the scenery was breathtaking from rock formations to volcanos and salt flats. We arrived at the Bolivian boarder and had to wait for the immigration office to open, eventually after 30 minutes it opened and we got our stamps of which we had to pay. The bus then drove us out to the midpoint between the two boarders and here we had to wait for our Chilean bus. There were two other tourists on the bus who had somehow not realized they had to get their exit stamps at the Bolivian exit point so they left us their bags and ran back to the boarder. The Chilean bus came and we loaded up and luckily had to fill paperwork out allowing the two other tourists time to get back before the bus left. Next came a ridiculously long wait at customs to have all our stuff searched and standing around waiting for some very lazy Chilean officials. By 11am it was all done and we were all back on the bus heading to Calama. We arrived in Calama around 3pm and we were all exhausted from the already long day on the bus. We had a bit of luck and were able to buy a ticket on the bus to San Pedro for 45 minutes time. I ran around trying to find an ATM as I needed money but unfortunately had no luck so I borrowed some money off one of the lads so I could buy some lunch. From my first purchase here in Chile it's obvious things are a lot more expensive here and I will need to be more careful with my money. The bus to San Pedro Atacama was very comfortable and the scenery was once again breath-taking. When I arrived I headed for my Couchsurfers house whilst the others made their way to down town to try and find a hostel. I found Luis's house no worries and one of his friends had just come around so they took me for a drive around the town and out into the valley. When we got back I met another Couchsurfer who was also staying at Luis's and I went into town with him so I could try change some money and buy a few groceries. Unfortunately I couldn't draw any money out but I was able to change what Bolivianos i had left. I also ran into Sven, Peter and Dez and we sussed out a plan for tommorrow to suss out tours and try get a hire car. I then headed back to Luis's at about 8:30 and he had just made dinner which was a delicious vegetable stew. I did some washing and then sorted some of my things before trying to get on the Internet. Luis speaks barely any English so our conversation was a little difficult but that gives me a good reason to practice and improve my Spanish.
