An 18 hour train ride, 5 hour bus ride, a rickshaw and another bus later we finally arrived in Pushkar. Train ride was OK, squishy beds, but our fellow train buddies were nice buying us Chai and attempting to talk to us, but alas, we do not speak Hindi. Finally arrived tired and hungry to Pushkar. No more serene peacful mountains, no more un-populated villages. we're now into the real India. I was actually taken by surprise as the bus hurtled its way towwards Amritsar in the Punjab region. Colours, crowds, noise, pollution, and more colour like I'e never seen. The bus ride was probably the most 'typically Indian thing Ive experienced so far. We left Shimla for Dharamasala about 300km north on a 'local' bus, which ended up stopping every 10 mins to let people on and off, so instead of 9 hours took about 12. The bus was madness, going down and up mountains, round hair-raising turns and steep cliffs. Well, a couple of days ago we ventured from Delhi on the train to Kalka, swapped onto the "Toy" train (it actually is a bit like a toy train) and headed up into the mountains to Shimla. We are currently at about 2500m above sea level. The train ride took in total 10 hours. we got here exhausted, but the stunning views from the hostel made it all worth it. made it to india OK! phew. after the beautiful clean and safe dubai, india is a real treat. reminds me a lot of cambodia so far. i find the way things are here refreshing and almost like you are on some poverty stricken movie set. its great! arrived here this morning and got picked up at the airport by the hostel. cows, dogs and mangy cats roam the streets, footless children begging for money and homeless people everywhere. next to that is the average man trying ...
