well mumbai was crazy. its clean and rich, well until you go 3 blocks back from the city centre then its crazy india again. large colonial buildings, thousands of guys playing cricket on the big parks. we saw the demolition of some shacks which had been erected onto the side of a building. someones livelihood down the drain at the click of the governments fingers. or is it the mafia? who knows. we caught the ferry out to elephanta island and saw the amazing rock carvings. monkeys trying to steal our food as per usual! pretty amazing carvings tho. the boats engine stopped in the middle of the harbour which was a bit scarey. but finally it started again. phew. really rich people in mumbai, the home of bollywood! and the distinction between them and the poor is just huge. they sit in cafes drinking lattes which would buy 20 people food for the day. its kind of disturbing. we went to chowpatty beach which was pretty dead aside from the pigeon feeders laying out the grain for the pigeons? again, why cant that food go to the poor and starving? got a huge surprise when i went into the toilet on the beach and it was full of naked ladies washing themselves in the toilets and washing their clothes too. i was a bit shocked. but hey, it must be the only place they can clean. they didnt look at me twice or look ashamed like it was totally normal to be washing yourself in a public toilet!! we stayed in mumbai for longer than expected because we decided to skip the ajanta caves and go straight back to delhi, so it was quite relaxing.
