We were meant to be leaving this day to go to Bulawayo on the overnight train, but as we were walking around the town relaxing after the rafting, we decided to stay for another 2 nights as we loved it here so so much. We first thought about going over to Livingstone on the Zambian side but we found out that it was 11 km and we didn't want to have to pay for transport as well as the visa. From there we decided to just go to Zambia for a day and see what the falls were like from their side. This was very very good decision. Luke and I thought that the views were about the same from either side but on the zambian side, it had a better view of the bridge and had a few little extras.
As we wandered around we saw some people on top of the falls. Right above it looking over as the water crashed below. As soon as we saw them we decided we were going to do that! We walked up to the top, on the conventional paths, then a local waved us over to an island. We had no idea to get there as there was a very fast flowing current between us. He then walked accross on a hidden walkway. He then carried our bags across and showed us a way to swim accross futher up. When we got to the island, we had to leave our bags there as we'd be doing some serious adventuring.
We all set out on, walking accross rocks and reeds and swimming some sections. We had to be very careful that the current didn't take us over the edge! Some of the rocks were very sharp so it was quite slow moving and we got some cuts on our feet but it was worth it. We first of all went to a ledge where water passed on either side of us and we could get an amazing view of the falls. It's so different looking from on top of it! We next went to a pool of water where we could jump in and swim around a bit. This was also scary as the if you went through the gap you would definately fall off the edge... As we walked back to the island, the sun was setting through the mist created by the falls. So so beautiful.
