We managed to get to Kampala from Kabale fine on a bus that is also used to carry their post around in. Such a good idea as it reduces the cost as well! When we got to Kampala, we realised that we had no idea how to get to Entebbe from there! So we asked around, a few taxi drivers tried to make us pay an extortionate rate but we eventually found someone who said that we could easily get a minibus there, and very cheaply! We then set out to find the minibus station, only to be walked there by a very very helpful passer by! Once we got to Entebbe, we then got on the back of a motorbike each to get to the delightful backpackers there. Luckly they accepted a range of currencies as we were running low on the ugandan shillings. They also did airport runs which was very helpful for us!
The next day after a night in the dorms there, we got to the airport and checked in fine until an official told us that we needed proof of a airoplane ticket out of Zimbabwe! We had no idea about this and panicked a little bit but we then decided to play it out and try to argue our way out. First of all we showed them our plane tickets out of South Africa, then our visas that we had already got for Australia and China. One official was happy with this proof but another one was reading out of a book and didn't seem to be happy with it. They sent us to the Kenya Airways office nearby to book a plane ticket out of Zimbabwe but no one who could help us was there! So we went back down to the check in desk and the overseer official said it was fine, especially as we had already checked in and he made sure that our bags were put on board.
The two flights were fine, however on our stop in Jomo Kenyatta, the plane decided it would try to leave a bit early so we were rushed to the gate and were two of the last 5 people to get on the plane! Scary! Getting into Zimbabwe was completely fine and none of the officials asked for a ticket out of the country to our relief. Asking around at the airport for advice on where to stay was great as a camera crew who were waiting to film a football team were there. The football team hadn't shown up so they offered to take us into town on their pickup truck and show where to go! They took us right into the hotel and asked about the prices for us, and even making sure we got into our rooms ok! They then left so quickly, only long enough to add us on facebook and get our thanks. Such amazingly kind people! We now realise how expensive Zimbabwe is compared to other countries in Africa because they now use the American dollar rather than their currency.
