I drove to the Drakensburs as Luke hasn't passed his test yet. I am completely fine with this as the drives are so beautiful here! The drive from Ballito was first of all boring as it was on a motorway but then when we turned off it we were stuck by the beauty of the Drakensburgs! They're so stunning! The road winds round loads of small and big hills going up and down. The backpackers is located about 20 km from the Sani pass (the only road between Lesotho and east of South africa but only 4X4s are allowed to use it). It is nestled at the bottom of some amazing hikes! When we got out of the car we realised how cold it was! It reminds me so much of the lake district (except on a slightly larger scale). The beds at this backpackers are so amazingly comfortable! Sadly the day after we got there it was torrential raining so we decided not to go on a hike! The day afterwards we did however and it was one of the most beautiful I've been on. Sadly it was quite cold as there were some amazing swimming spots. In the evening we did some more of our amazing making up coooking which is always working out amazingly!! Also talking to some German girls was really interesting as one of them had ben to Australia so was giving me some great advice.
The next day we did a tour up the Sani pass to Lesotho and then a hike up one of it's highest points. The drive up was amazing. It is the only pass between Lesotho and SA on the east side and it can only be accessed by 4 wheel drive cars. On the way up the amazingly windy road, we were shown some great views, steadily getting better the higher we got. There were paths along the side of the road and when we asked our guide he said it was for marijuana smuggling and it was very likely that we'd see some of them on our hike! The guide was all for it as it bought some much needed money into Lesotho which was interesting to hear some different viewpoints.
When we finaly reached the top after going though the passport checkpoints (yay more stamps in my passport!), we started our hike. We were with a couple from Holland who were really friendly and walked along at the same pace as us which was brilliant. We hiked up a valley full of horses and sheep and really well hidden sheepherds huts. We only spotted them because of our guide pointing them out! When we got to the peak after a bit of rock climbing and slipping around, the views were spectacular! So so amazing! One of the most amazing things i've ever seen! It is up there on the list of vic falls and the gorrillas. WOW! We were allowed to stay up there for 45 mins just taking in the stunning scenery until we had to go before a storm started to build up and lightning stuck. Our path back took us along the cliffs that separate Lesotho from SA. It's a sheer drop that allows some more amazing views. The walk ended up at the highest pub in Africa where we enjoyed a cold beer with that amazing background. I'd definately want to visit this again! The journey back to the backpackers was just as stunning as the way up and we were all ready for a long nights sleep!
