Camels dancing and moustache twirling.
We are now in the middle of the mayhem of the Pushkar camel fair. As you can imagine there are a lot of camels, 30,000 apparently, and also many cows, horses, performing monkeys, tightrope walkers, hawkers and tourists and pilgrims. All of this is set in Pushkar, a really pretty and small town with winding streets, which are usually peaceful but are now full of people. Despite the number of people, the fair is really interesting and has a great atmosphere, kind of like India's answer to Glastonbury. You can spend an entire day wandering around just watching people and animals and eating lots of food.
The camel fair is actually not the main event, which is in fact for lots of pilgrims to bathe in the holy lake, as this months full moon is a particularly auspicious time to do so.
The tourist board have put on some bizarre events such as small children balancing on tightropes, water pot race, camel dancing competition, turban tying and best moustache competition! We have two more days here, who knows what to expect, maybe a camel spitting competition?
